Read on about Rosacea Treatment on the Central Coast….

You may have a common but often misunderstood skin condition known as Rosacea.

What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a chronic and complex skin condition because it can be linked to genetics, gut bacteria and environmental triggers – particularly UV rays from the sun.

Although very common, affecting millions of people worldwide, most people are unaware of the condition or self-diagnose it as another skin issue. Rosacea typically starts with episodes of flushing or blushing but can progress to persistent redness, visible blood vessels or bumps on the skin. Usually, symptoms are most prominent in the face, particularly the central part being the cheeks, nose, chin and forehead. Sometimes even the lower eyelid may become red and inflamed.

Symptoms of Rosacea include:

â—Ź Fluctuating facial redness due to flushing;
â—Ź Visible blood vessels, appearing as small veins under the skin;
â—Ź Inflamed acne-like lumps and bumps that occur periodically;
â—Ź Burning or stinging sensation on the face.

More severe cases of Rosacea can lead to other symptoms, such as papules (red bumps), pustules (puss-filled bumps) and thickening of the skin, particularly on the nose.

The Impact of Rosacea

Rosacea can have a significant impact on a person’s quality of life due to visible symptoms and discomfort, causing issues with self-esteem and social interactions. It tends to come and go over time, with flare-ups triggered by various factors. These may be environmental, including sun exposure, spicy foods, alcohol, caffeine or extreme temperatures; genetic, if the condition runs in your family; or due to abnormalities in blood vessels of the face.

Many individuals try various over-the-counter or prescription treatments, plus trips to GPs and dermatologists, which are often ineffective and lead them to living with the effects of Rosacea. However, whilst there is currently no cure, with proper treatment, individuals are able to manage their condition and reduce its impact on their day-to-day lives.

How to Treat Rosacea

There are several ways to effectively treat Rosacea, with the choice of treatment varying based on the severity of the condition and individual factors. For Rosacea Treatment on the Central Coast, look no further than You By Dr Shauna Watts

To get the best results, Rosacea needs to be viewed as a chronic problem, with 4 main components to treatment:

1. A specific treatment phase for the skin – this involves effective sessions with our experienced Dermal Therapists. Treatments will vary depending on the individual, but may include using minimal downtime laser sessions, LED phototherapy and working towards gentle skin peels. It may also involve prescription medications which can be written up during your appointment at the clinic.

2. Effective skin care – initially aimed at restoring the skin barrier and reducing inflammation, before working towards consistent control of the rosacea, maintaining the effects of in-clinic treatments and eventually gaining skin confidence and radiance.

3. A light, mineral SPF of 50+ – a usable, everyday product to protect against sun exposure and harmful UV rays.

4. Appropriate lifestyle modification – this involves establishing and avoiding any obvious dietary or environmental triggers, as well as restoration of the important gut/skin biome axis which is the communication system between the gut, brain and skin. Changes in the gut microbiome can influence the immune system and neuroendocrine pathways, affecting skin health.
