Peels

Chemical peels are a procedure in which a chemical solution is applied to your skin in order to remove the top layers. The skin that grows back is smoother, giving your face a brighter, healthier glow. Chemical peels are a great way to refresh and rejuvenate your skin as well as treat a variety of common skin concerns. By stripping away the old layers of skin, skin peels create a smoother skin tone and texture, giving patients a clearer and more youthful appearance.

Dr Shauna Watts takes each person’s individual skin needs into account when developing a suitable treatment plan.

How Do Chemical Peels Work?

Over time, our skin can become built up with bacteria and dead skin. This can make our faces appear dry and contribute to signs of ageing such as lines, wrinkles, and sun damage. Skin peels involve applying a chemical solution to the skin in order to remove the surface oils and dead cells while stimulating the growth of new, healthy skin cells.

Chemical peels are used to treat wrinkles, discoloured skin, and scars, generally on the face. They can be done alone or combined with other cosmetic procedures. Depending on the issues you want to address, Dr Watts will recommend a chemical face peel in one of three depths:

  • Light, for the outer layer
  • Medium for skin cells from the epidermis
  • Deep for ageing skin, scars or precancerous growths

The choice of chemical skin peel is dependent on your consultation and advice from Dr Watts and her team.

Benefits of Chemical Peels

Skin peels are a quick, versatile treatment that effectively improves overall skin tone and texture. The procedure offers an excellent treatment option for people concerned about pigmentations, acne scars, wrinkles, discoloured skin, as well as other skin imperfections. Additionally, they remove the surface layer of skin to treat dullness and create a brighter, vibrant appearance.

Different types can produce different results, depending on your skin requirements and treatment plan. Skin peels work to:

  • Soften lines and wrinkles
  • Stimulate skin cell renewal
  • Lighten sun spots and other pigmentations
  • Reduce acne and pore size
  • Create a smoother overall skin tone

Just one chemical peel treatment can yield noticeable skin rejuvenation results. Since different skin types will benefit from different skin peels, Dr Watts will develop a tailored treatment plan during your consultation.

The Procedure

The process for professional skin peels will depend on the type of peel you are undergoing. Dr Watts will give you information on how you can prepare to help you get the most out of your treatment. For example, there are different types of chemical peels:

Light Skin Peels

A light chemical peel takes less than 20 minutes. When the chemical solution is applied to your skin, you may feel a slight tingling, but most patients are able to tolerate this type very well. Light chemical peels are a great way to treat mild skin damage and pigmentations.

Medium Skin Peels

During a medium skin peel, Dr Watts will apply the chemical solution, which will slightly whiten the treated skin. A cool compress may be used to soothe the treated area, and you may feel a mild stinging for about 20 minutes afterwards. Medium chemical peels are great for treating moderate lines and wrinkles, acne and acne scars, as well as age spots.

Deep Skin Peels

The treated skin will turn white or grey, and Dr Watts may perform the treatment in 15-minute portions in order to control skin exposure to the chemical solution. This is the strongest type of peel, providing deep exfoliation for long-lasting results.

Recovery and Results

After chemical skin peels, most people recover quickly. You can expect some amount of redness and swelling, and in a few days, your skin may start to peel and flake. As well as this, medium or deep chemical peels may cause temporary swelling, blotchiness, and longer-lasting redness. These are normal effects of treatment and should resolve on their own with the appropriate care.

After a gentle peeling process, the fresher skin underneath reveals an improved skin tone, reduced wrinkles, and a noticeably smoother skin texture. As a result, your skin will be left looking younger and more vibrant.
